Jet Lag [Vinyl]

Jet Lag [Vinyl] Review

See more picture

Vinyl LP pressing. 2010 debut album from Why? multi-instrumentalist Josiah Wolf. Jet Lag offers up a rare achievement--a solo work with true legs of its own. Wolf's visual snapshots illustrate the wistfulness of a mundane moment and offer canny excavations of those poignancies that lie beneath the surface: tough triumphs, tougher truths, and outright failures. His lean poems are set to an autumnal mix of warm Folk and easy Psychedelia played out (by Wolf alone) on guitar, vibes, kalimba, Hammond organ, bells, bass, and drums, to name a few. The end result, a sort of Chamber Pop minus the showy sweeps--virtuosity without the virtuoso--makes Jet Lag as impressive in its subtle execution as it is a timeless, heartfelt listen.

Jet Black Leather Machine

Jet Black Leather Machine Review

See more picture

Who was Vince Taylor? For one, he was the inspiration behind David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. He also wrote one of the great Rock songs of all time, "Brand New Cadillac" (most famously covered by The Clash off their 1979 opus, London Calling). Granted, stylistically he owed a huge debt to his heroes, Elvis Presely, Gene Vincent & Eddie Cochran. And while not the most original Rocker on the scene, he did trademark the black leather suit before any of them. Of course, at the height of his popularity, just as he was about to break through, he notoriously "lost it" onstage. Apparently, the acid he allegedly scored off of Bob Dylan was part of the reason he wrapped a towel around his head, proclaimed himself Jesus Christ & preached to the crowd before trashing his band's gear Who-style. The liner notes will give you the full story, I'm just trying to wet your whistle.

All that said, in terms of the material there aren't alot of originals like "Brand New Cadilliac". In fact, a case could be argued that the likes of Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran & Gene Vincent laid down the definitive versions of many of the songs herein. What sets Vince Taylor apart however is not the material he covered, but how he did it. In terms of intensity, attack & edge, this is some of the most ferocious Rockbilly around. We've all heard "Long Tall Sally" a thousand times, but not with this kind of abandon.

The French praised him for his feral wildness onstage & listening to the likes of "Cadillac", "Jet Black Leather Machine" & "Since My Baby Left Me", it was no myth. Other standouts include a stellar "Jezebel" & "Hi Heeled Sneakers". Also noteworthy is the eerie, "Endless Sleep" . Granted, singing an upbeat song about your baby shooting herself is not going to be a guaranteed hit, but the jauntiness of the rare B-side, "Cold White & Beautiful" is likely to send a chill up your spine. As will no doubt, Taylor's performances throughout.

True, he wasn't the most original act in town, but if you're looking for something beyond Elvis, Chuck or Buddy---something on brink, Ace records has kindly made it available for you. If you delighted to the Psychobilly of Hasil Atkins, Stud Cole or The Cramps---Vince Taylor is right up your alley. 2008 collection from the British '50s and '60s Rock 'N' Roller. This is the first time that all of the high points of Vince Taylor's musical career have been gathered together on one CD. All phases of Vince's career are covered, with tracks from the Parlophone, Palette, Barclay and Davantage labels. Since the '50s, he has been an icon to Rock 'N' Roll weirdness, cited by David Bowie as a one of the influences on the invention of the Ziggy Stardust character. Vince's fascinating and ultimately unhappy story is told in the notes written by Mojo journalist Kieron Tyler. 22 tracks including 'Brand New Cadillac'. Ace.

We Tried But We Couldn't Get it off the Ground

We Tried But We Couldn't Get it off the Ground Review

See more picture

The Slow Jets critically acclaimed first two albums Worm Into Phoenix and Good Morning Stars established the band as one of the preminent turn of the century art rock outfits. Skyscraper Magazine called the group's last effort "One of the Best Albums You Didn't Hear.," The Big Takeover raved that the Jets "possess the chops, the skills., the range and energy", Ghetto Blaster prounced the group easily "passes the test" of making "consistently intersting" records.

Now, with the presentation of the bands original line-up and revamped sound the Slow Jets morphed into rocking alter ego the "Paper Jets", a re-fi, deconstructed version of the Slow Jets featuring legendary Oranges Band frontman Roman Kebler, bassist and songwriter Rick Ivy, and Slow Jets guitarist Greg Preston.

Writing songs with chaotic clarity and unwieldy cohesion, the Paper Jets offer a series of powerful compositions that re-invent the concept of pop structure, wired with indelible melodies and eccentric lyrics, a Slow Jets signature. Adding to the depth of the record is its textured progression from the sub-rock simmerings of "Summer of The Shark" to the full out sonic assault of "Propellor Planes." As evidenced by past efforts of these talented musicians, We Tried... solidifies the Jets standing as one of the most accomplished craftsman of the lo-fi rock sound.

Beautiful Scars

Beautiful Scars Review

See more picture

Jet Lag is one of the most important new Spanish bands. Based in Madrid, they quickly became the "next big thing" in the Spanish alternative scene with their debut album ("Amplifier", Bittersweet Recordings, 2000). The songs in that first record put them really close to some of their heroes: REM, Fountains of Wayne, Wilco…, bands that know how to mix an elegant pop songwriting with high power guitars and rock attitude.

"Beautiful Scars" was chosen in each and every Best Of The Year album list in Spain, including a wide range of magazines, from hard rock ones to alternative / trendy others, reflecting the capability of the band to concern and reach any kind of listener. Now you have a chance to know why. The American edition includes 3 Bonus Tracks: one new song and two astonishing covers: "Hungry Heart" (from Bruce Springsteen) and "Beautiful" (from Cristina Aguilera / Linda Perry), only released before in the Spanish "3 Singles EP". It also comes out on Vinyl for the first time with a special LP + 7" EP package. The artwork is the original Spanish cover with a revised logo and back cover.

Wildly uneven, and not satisfying - Scott Waldon - benicia, ca United States
These Spanish guys have not decided what they want to be. There are some bombastic rough edged tunes, some ballads, and some straight ahead pop/rock. The latter is by far the most compelling, and the ballads (besides Rain) are very nondescript. The cover songs are abysmal (especially Hungry Heart). That was a very mediocre Springsteen song anyway, but believe me, you don't want to hear this. If they stick to the mid-tempo stuff next time; they may warrant another listen.

L'Avventura

L'Avventura Review

thank you to the person who stated the obvious, "this is not LUNA." i'm glad someone else isn't expecting the same old from dean wareham. i'm glad he's doing something slightly different. i love luna, i love galaxie 500, but i also love all kinds of artists. do you really think dean is so limited that everything he puts out is going to sound the same? it's as if people aren't aware that most of these songs are covers. anyways, this album is amazing. his version of the song "moonshot" is up there with anything he's ever done, and it could be his finest hour. britta's voice is something you could fall in love with. i found myself surfing for images of her while listening to her. not in a pervy sense, but just to see who is making this joyous sound. she's more than a singer, she is a "chanteuse." "sultry" would be one way to describe her voice. "positively randy" would be another. the harmonies are beautiful and fans of mazzy star will dig this, but so will fans of serge gainsbourg. sure, the lyrics are a little trite at times, but his delivery makes them profound. they are simple, yet beautiful. i can picture this guy making great music for years to come. he seems to get better with age. though, judging by his recent appearance he may disappear completely if he doesn't put on some weight! In the tradition of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, L'Avventura is a sly, silky, sexy, and romantic record. Singing together and apart, Dean and Britta have created a distinctive collection of originals and classic songs that evoke the warm breeze of spring and amour. 'Bohemian antiheroes' - Elle. Produced by the legendary Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T Rex, Moody Blues). Jetset. 2003.

5 stars to offset the One Star Review - come on! - Phillip A. Anderson - Dallas, Texas
This is just to help even things out - obviously someone got a genera of music he does not like so he trashed it with a one star review. I would give it a 3 1/2 star review myself (maybe a 4) - I do love Lee and Nancy and if you do - you will definitely dig this. Dean and Britta make music because they love music and it shows.

Not too shabby - M@ - St. Louis, MO USA
While I will agree that this is not Luna, for which both Deaan Wareham and Britta Phillips are best known for, it is still an album that is both full and exciting. There are not only original pieces of music on this, but some unexpected covers. While it was initially started as a side-project to Luna for the duo, it has rightly taken the forefront of their respective music careers after the disbandment of Luna. Although some are not pleased with the deviation from the standard Luna album, this is a good accompanyment to their releases, if only for the close ties that Dean and Britta have to it.
